For Stealing the First Mate we’re talking about best friends. Nigel and Darcy have been friends since they were six. They’re grown now and Nigel’s in love with Darcy. My best friend story:

My husband and I started out as friends, but now I consider him my best friend. Through the toughest situations I’ve ever faced, he’s been by my side. We do everything together.

We’ve faced our son’s life-threatening surgery and 21-day hospital stay when he was a year old. We kept each other sane through long days and worse nights.

He’s the one who took me to the beach so I could see the ocean for the first time. Which brings me to the story I want to tell you.

My husband is my staunchest supporter. He’s the one who, when I said I wanted to write, told me he knew I could do it. When I finished my first book, he asked when it would be published. He never doubted I’d make it. When the first agent turned me down, he asked who was next on the list. When the second and third said “no”, he said “keep going”.

The day the first contract came through, he was the first person I told, and his response was simple yet powerful. I’m sure you can guess what he said.

“I knew you’d get it.”

Unwavering support and love. That’s what best friends are made of.
