Fate reboots their old show and summons Staci, and Mike’s wife Celeste, to a fresh chance at entertaining modern families. After much discussion, they carefully accept. But when the show goes horribly awry, Staci, Celeste, and even Mike find themselves sorely tempted and even tricked into violating their most cherished ideals.

Author Interview:

What was the highlight of writing this book?

Mike Whitaker presents his story with some backstory in the first two chapters. Mike’s moral convictions show that he is disappointed with the choices Celeste (his wife) and Staci (his sister) were forced into. Mike is not holier-than-thou. He realizes that he is not immune to the ravages of this world.

Did you have an “aha” moment where everything came together?

I had read two articles:  GotQuestion.org’s entitled “Can a Christian consider a career in acting / entertainment?” https://www.gotquestions.org/Christian-acting-entertainment.html and Focus on the Family’s Plugged In’s entitled “What Does it Mean to Be Christian … and an Actor?” https://www.pluggedin.com/blog/mean-christian-actor/

GotQuestion.org’s article raised several of the moral issues that I help address in the novel. When I visited with a fellow Christian friend who had done some acting as a child in Hollywood, he encouraged me that I should say something after I watched what a professing Christian actor had done on a TV show. When I saw that a TV movie had been made telling some of the backstory about a real TV show, all these ideas came together along with the call to write this novel.

Are you working on your next book already? What can you tell us?

I have been toying with a possible sequel to “Bobby’s Girls.”  I have not felt moved yet to put anything to paper. The story would continue with some other moral issues that actors might face. I would stay away from drugs and sexual issues. There are other moral issues that do not have to involve these issues.

How long, on average, does it take you to write a book?

I have tried to write stories and books. The time can vary. On this book, it took two months for the basic premise to come together. I started writing the day after Memorial Day that summer of 2019. I had some ideas where I wanted to go. As I wrote, I thought of some other items that I might want to put in. The first rough draft took five weeks on my computer. I finished on July 5, 2019. Anna (my wife) and I spent the next three months editing.

What has influenced you the most as a writer?

My faith in Jesus Christ has been a big influence on me as a writer. I believe that God called me to write this novel when I did.

About the Author

John R. Price is a Christian, loving husband, college teacher, and writer in Central Arkansas. For over 40 years, he has loved watching classic television and following the entertainment industry as a hobby. He also enjoys studying Christian apologetics. He is married to Anna, his wife, who helped edit his first Christian novel, “Bobby Girls: A Novel.”

More from John

I wrote the book as a Christian response to a well-known actor starring in a popular television show reboot. I thought the topic would be an interesting fictional exploration what actors and fans should consider when a TV show seems to compromise an actor’s values.

I chose the Dallas metroplex as the main setting because I have visited the area several times. As a child in the early 1980s, I remember watching two Dallas TV stations on cable TV.
