Starli Cameron gave up her career plans to be a concert pianist to marry the man of her dreams. He turned out to be a nightmare. When he dies in a car accident, Starli takes the insurance money and builds a successful and upscale restaurant: Apple Blossoms in rural West Virginia. Threats from someone determined to ruin her life and the suspicious romantic advances from her new chef force Starli to search her heart and finally turn to God for real healing. Sir Joel Peterman-Blair, top notch chef from England, is roped by his uncle, into filling in as head Chef at Apple Blossoms. Joel, with his sanguine-personality, has always laughed and flirted his way through life. But now, confronted with and attracted to the most beautiful woman he’s ever met, Joel has to prove his sincerity and depth of character to his icy-cold employer. Can his love for God and for this woman reach out far enough to rescue her from her own mistrust and bitterness? Will he learn that life is not all play? And can they both work together to find the source of threats that seem to be coming from Starli’s past?

Book Review:

Carole Brown has this uncanny ability to make dislikable heroes and heroines. She’s done it again in Knight in Shining Apron with Starli, who I loved to hate. Her hot/cold attitude made me feel ill. Every time she would get jealous over Joel and react with high school drama and catty remarks, I rolled my eyes ( I know, real mature of me). The uptick to that is Starli’s character growth. When you start at the bottom, the only way to go is up.

Now, don’t get huffy with me. I understand why Starli acts the way she does. She’s been hurt before and has major trust issues. I don’t doubt her actions felt justified. Which is the main reason her redemption was wonderful and uplifting. It can be difficult to let go and trust God to heal our past wounds and provide us with the future we think we should have.

That’s the best part of Carole Brown’s books. She isn’t shy about diving into difficult topics. Nor does she downplay God’s handiwork in the characters she portrays. Knight in Shining Apron is a beautifully uplifting story filled with zany characters and a multi-layered plot.

The mystery aspect was fun. I did have it figured out by about midway, but I still had a grand time seeing the fruits of labor as they came to a head.

I requested a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. I was not required to leave a review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.
