The Number of Love

Three years into the Great War, England’s greatest asset is their intelligence network—field agents risking their lives to gather information, and codebreakers able to crack every German telegram. Margot De Wilde thrives in the environment of the secretive Room 40, where she spends her days deciphering intercepted messages. But when her world is turned upside down by an unexpected loss, for the first time in her life numbers aren’t enough.

Drake Elton returns wounded from the field, followed by an enemy that just won’t give up. He’s smitten quickly by the too-intelligent Margot, but how to convince a girl who lives entirely in her mind that sometimes life’s answers lie in the heart?

Amidst biological warfare, encrypted letters, and a German spy who wants to destroy not just them, but others they love, Margot and Drake will have to work together to save them all from the very secrets that brought them together.

Book Review:

Margot is back with her very own book and once again Roseanna M. White astounds with her details. Each time I read one of her books, I’m amazed again at the intensity of her characters. Margot is a mathematician and a codebreaker, never once does her character feel like anything less. Every thought and action fits the paradigm of Margot’s personality.

When emotions equal chaos and everything has a number, I loved when Drake brought Margot’s attention to one pertinent detail. Margot doesn’t believe in feelings, believes that feelings should not be given the justification of being real. But Margot does have feelings, she simply sees them in numbers. At some point, she must decide if there are times when one plus one does not equal two.

Historically rich in detail and filled with vivid imagery, The Number of Love is a book you’ll not want to miss. As the beginning of a new series, you’ll be introduced to new characters while enjoying the return of beloved characters from Shadows over England.

As Christian Fiction goes, The Number of Love is solid. Margot suffers heartbreak and finds herself blaming God, something we are all potentially guilty of. Her journey is two-fold, with a search to find God while also avoiding the feelings of love Drake encourages.

Drake fulfills the expected role as powerful protector and staunch soldier. He is willing to give his life for his country and for Margot.

The suspense and intrigue were well-played if a bit slow at times. There were moments when it felt as though nothing at all was moving forward in the story, then a sudden rush through the climax. I didn’t mind the slow moments too much as the writing carried such a depth I lost myself in the prose and wit of Margot and Drake.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

About the author:roseanna white

Roseanna M. White is a bestselling, Christy Award-nominated author who has long claimed that words are the air she breathes. When not writing fiction, she’s homeschooling her two kids, editing, designing book covers, and pretending her house will clean itself.

Roseanna is the author of a slew of historical novels that span several continents and thousands of years. Spies and war and mayhem always seem to find their way into her books…to offset her real life, which is blessedly ordinary.
