Book Review:

First off, On a Summer Tide had a beautiful opening. If you have sisters, you’ll connect right away with Cam, Blaine, and Maddie. While their approaches to life differ, and sometimes they don’t even seem to like each other, the sister bond always wins in the end. After their mother’s death, they drifted apart since she was the glue holding them together. Now, they barely tolerate one another.

I enjoyed the contradictory personalities of the sisters, typical oldest, middle, and youngest syndromes and the way they were expressed really brought perspective and depth to the book. I’m the youngest of three, older brother and sister, so I connected with Blaine despite On a Summer Tide being Cam’s story. I loved Cam and Maddie, but I wanted to whack them with a wooden spoon a couple times.

Favorite part of the book: when Blaine accuses Maddie of always taking Cam’s side. I had that exact experience with my brother when I was fifteen.

Here’s the skinny:

Cam…oldest child, type A personality, knows everything, has a great job but can’t see past the nose on her face

Maddie…middle child, training to be a counselor, tries to ‘fix’ everyone by giving them a label, pushover

Blaine…youngest, has no clue what she wants to be when she grows up, terrified of moving on after her mother’s death

With a remote island setting, this is a perfect vacation read. If you happen to live on an island, I guess you can read it anytime you want, you’re sure to fall in love with sand and water all over again.

The romance was nice, a steady building that felt neither rushed nor too slow. But I can’t get past the sibling relationships. So much good stuff there. If you’re not crazy about romance, you’ll probably be okay here since there’s more going on than just Cam and Seth. I can’t wait for the rest of the series.

On the spiritual front, it’s midway for me. Suzanne Woods Fisher certainly knows how to toe the line between not enough and too much. I feel like Goldilocks right now, everything was juuuuussttt right.

Oh-So-Maine Blueberry Buckle

Summer in Maine means plump, tart blueberries are everywhere. Here’s a family recipe that is nearly fool-proof….and so delicious! Especially with a scoop or two with vanilla ice cream.

Ever wonder how it got the name Blueberry Buckle? While the batter rises as it bakes, but the blueberries and crumb topping weigh it down. This causes the surface of the cake to buckle…hence the name.

Batter:

¾ cup sugar

¼ cup soft butter

1 egg

½ cup milk

2 cups sifted flour

½ teaspoon salt

2 teaspoons baking powder

2 cups drained blueberries

Crumb Topping:

½ cup sugar

½ cup flour

½ teaspoon cinnamon

¼ cup softened butter

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Mix sugar and butter with egg. Stir in milk Sift together and stir in flour, baking powder and salt. Carefully blend in blueberries. Put on topping before baking. Pour in a greased and floured 9” square pan.

Bake 45-50 minutes.
