Shadow Unbound by Angie Day: Book Review

Legend Undone and Shadow Unbound by Angie Day: Book Review

Mara wasn’t just a Legend who survived on human energy, she used to be a dangerous Shadow who wielded more power than she wanted. When she discovered that Alec, the leader of the Shadows and her childhood love, held a dark secret about her past to keep her prisoner until he could use her against the humans, she ran.

As the first Legend to escape the Shadows alive, Mara must keep moving, hiding among the humans that every Legend learned to hate, while she searches to understand her past. Under the alias Kate, she meets Kylan and his way of life challenges everything she used to know. As she falls for Kylan, she finds clues about what happened before she became a Shadow.

But the closer she gets to an answer, the faster Alec can destroy everything she has grown to love.

Mara is a Legend, born with unmatched power. More than that, she is a Shadow: ruthless, feared, and lethal. But all of that changed when she became Kate and fell in love with a perfectly human life and the Legend that showed her how to live it: Kylan. After battling the Shadows and uncovering the memories they stole, she was free. Free to be with Kylan, his family, and the Rogue life they had chosen.

When a new human is brought into their lives, everything unravels. The family she has grown to love is thrown into chaos. Kate can’t save any of them. But Mara can.

As Mara steps back into her previous life as a Shadow, it fits a little too well. The longer she walks with danger, the more she sees in common with the Shadows she left than the Rogue she was pretending to be.

When her two worlds collide, Mara should be faced with a choice. But a greater evil awaits her, one with the power to shatter both worlds.

Book Review:

Legend Undone:

This first book certainly sets the stage for upcoming troubles and danger as Mara/Kate decides to take on a new life. Her fierce independence and ability to fend for herself makes her one of the strongest heroines I’ve read about in a long time.

That strength will also be a major downfall as she struggles to find anyone she can trust or who might not be repelled by her behavior. Here’s where Kylan comes in and shows Kate that not all Legends are bad.

I love the writing style and constant internal battles the characters face. Even when all seems safe in the outside world, there is internal drama to push the story forward. The fast pace and push/pull of the romance with those lingering dangers will keep you reading.

Shadow Unbound:

I would definitely recommend reading book one before you try and jump into Shadow Unbound. While you’ll be able to follow the story, the depth of despair and the romantic ties will be more interesting with the context of Legend Undone under your reading belt.

Mara/Kate is once again forging ahead on her own and blazing a trail for others to follow. Another high action, wild ride that will leave you wanting more of Kate’s story.

I could have wrung Kylan’s neck in this one, even though I can understand his decisions and empathize with his struggle. But those decisions make the ending all the sweeter as Kylan and Kate learn and grow because of each other. An excellent novel. Highly recommend.
