With My Soul author Laurie Batzel

By Laurie Batzel

Historical Romance

Release Day: October 1,2019

Book Blurb:

Betrayed by her husband, Willa Jane Wilson and her daughter are left penniless and alone in post-war Germany. She returns to her hometown in rural North Carolina and prays that a new beginning will soothe the anger still raging inside her heart. But no matter how many miles Willa Jane puts between her and her shame, the peace she seeks is drowned out by ignorance and abandonment.
Her saving grace comes in the form of a new opportunity that she can’t pass up. Tasked with caring for children at a local orphanage, she dedicates herself to transforming the financially-strapped institution into a real home filled with love and faith. But when her fundraising mission lands her in the middle of Raleigh’s glittering social scene, she encounters PJ Townshend, a handsome young lawyer with a dedication to service that matches her own. There’s only one problem: PJ is on track to change the country from its political epicenter—Washington D.C.—and the closer they grow to one another, the farther apart their worlds seem to be taking them.

When a natural disaster of Biblical proportions threatens to part them for good, it also puts the orphanage and everything Willa Jane has worked for in peril. An offer for help arrives from the most unexpected source. Accepting it will require forgiveness of the past…but it might also reunite her with the person her heart desires most.

What is the inspiration behind your writing?

For my debut, With My Soul, the inspiration for the theme came from the hymn “It is Well With My Soul,” both the lyrics that speak of indomitable faith against adversity, and the powerful story behind the man who penned it. The plot was inspired by my grandmother’s courageous journey as a divorced single mother in the south during the years immediately after WWII.

Do you have a favorite author or book?

I re-read the Anne of Green Gables series every few years because it means something different to me in each season of life, but I love it more each time. My two recent favorite books have been The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society and Becoming Mrs. Lewis (in case it’s not obvious, I have a thing for British literature!) Recently, I’ve discovered the historical fiction of co-authors Hazel Gaynor and Heather Webb, and their books are amazing!

How have you surprised yourself during your writing journey?

I think what surprised me most was that it was possible. I’ve always loved to write, but growing up, authors seemed like such remote, impossible beings. Writing an entire book, then getting someone to publish it seemed completely out of reach until I actually started talking to other authors, and realizing that it is possible.

What book are you currently reading for fun and are you reading anything for research?

I’m actually on a self-imposed mission to read biographies of all the American Presidents, so for fun, I’m reading David McCullough’s biography of John Adams. For research, I’m actually reading a book about John Quincy Adams’ post-presidential career in the House of Representatives, but it’s for a very involved book idea that I’m only starting to outline…

If you could sit down to dinner with three authors, who would they be and what would you discuss?

Lucy Maude Montgomery would be the author I would love to sit down, and talk about books, and writing with; C.S. Lewis would be the one I would go to for the big spirituality and faith discussions; and Dorothy Parker would just be fun to talk to about anything!

What’s next for you as an author?

Right now I’m in different stages with a few different manuscripts. I’ve got a few that are out with literary agents, and publishers that I’m hoping will find a published home somewhere, one that I’m revising, and at least two more that I’m drafting/outlining. I write only when my kids are at school/napping/husband is home, so I try to be very efficient with the limited time that I have!

My heartfelt thanks to Laurie and Anaiah Press for the interview today. Hope everyone enjoyed learning more about this great author. Book review for With My Soul coming soon!
