Book Review:

At what level do genes play a part in a person’s makeup? Interesting question, and intriguing aspect for a book. One brother, serial killer. Another brother, a US Marshal. They’ve already been pitted against each other once and the Marshal won.

But now it’s time for round two. Can forty-year-old Mitch Whitehorse, a has-been marshal, round up Wade, his serial killer brother, before he destroys more lives?

I’m gonna say it…Mitch is a bit of a hypocrite…and I didn’t like him at first. Here’s why. He’s so dead set that Jane is an accomplice to Wade. He’s judgmental, irritating, and downright scornful of Jane’s proclaimed innocence. Which lead me to one single thought. He’s YOUR brother. You didn’t know for a long time, and you’re judging the wife because she says she didn’t know how much of a monster Wade turned out to be…tsk tsk.

I gotta admit, it really ramped up the conflict and made the resolution that much sweeter. Around midway, I started to realize why Mitch reacted the way he did: Guilt. Plain and simple. He’d suspected for years what Wade was capable of, and he turned a blind eye to it. Accusing Jane of his own crime made him feel better. It’s not fair, but it’s life.

Okay, enough dawdling in the psyche.

This is the second book by Dana Mentink I’ve had the pleasure of reading and I’m not disappointed. She has an ability to draw the reader in, weaving a web of intricate details that won’t let go until after the final page is turned. Getting to read a book set on a remote ranch just added an extra dose of beauty.

Her spiritual links are strong – something I appreciate. Jane has a solid faith in God, despite, or maybe because of, everything that’s happened to her. Other members on the ranch share a similar strength, but as secondary characters, it’s up to Jane to lead the spiritual charge.

The old ‘you can lead a horse to water but you can’t make them drink’ reminds me of Mitch and his refusal to believe in God. It’s a universal problem. Mitch can’t understand why men like Wade exist if God is real. The answer is simple, but the realizations of it can be hard to digest, another aspect Danger on the Ranch manages to cover in at least some detail.

Another thing I’ve come to expect from Dana Mentink is her ability to pack action into a story without making it overwhelm the reader. The steady build increases just enough to make you want to keep reading without reaching that point of impossibility.

Overall, I recommend this book for anyone who enjoys action, drama, and suspense.

I requested a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. I was not required to leave a positive review. All thoughts and opinions expressed are my own.

More from Dana

We’re kicking off a new cowboy series, but this one is going to take you for a wild ride! Set on a ranch that’s sandwiched between the sea and the hills required me to do some on site research of course! I spent quite a while in this gorgeous area of California, looking for cattle. (You can see the zany results in my video.) I found the cattle, and also the perfect setting for this first book. It’s a creepy one, I’ll warn you, as hero Mitch Whitehorse comes face to face with the serial killer brother he sent to prison….and his desperate ex sister in law. Saddle up and enjoy the story! God bless!
